Der Dortmunder Hochschullehrer Prof. Dr. Erich Ch. Wittmann, kürzlich von der Universität Kiel als erster deutscher Mathematik-Didaktiker mit der Ehrendoktorwürde ausgezeichnet, hat eine weitere bedeutende Anerkennung erhalten: Er wurde für das Jahr 2000 eingeladen, einen der Hauptvorträge beim International Congress on Mathematical Education zu halten.
Der Weltkongreß der Mathematikdidaktiker findet seit 1968 alle vier Jahre statt. 1976 fand die wichtigste Tagung zum Thema Mathematik-Erziehung in Karlsruhe statt. Damals war der Kasseler Didaktiker Arnold Kirsch als bisher einziger Deutscher zu einem Hauptvortrag eingeladen.
Im Jahr 2000 wird Wittmann, der Hauptinitiator des Unterichtswerks "Mathe 2000" und führende Kopf der deutschen Mathematik-Didaktik, in Japan eines der vier grundlegenden Referate halten.
