Wie verhalten sich Menschen bei ihren Entscheidungen im Wirtschaftsleben? Handeln wir tatsächlich so vorausschauend, rational und eigennützig wie die Wissenschaft uns lange Zeit glauben machen wollte? Dr. Axel Ockenfels und seine Mitarbeiter vom Max-Planck-Institut zur Erforschung von Wirtschaftssystemen in Jena stellen das in Frage: In ihrem Experimentallabor erleben Studenten am eigenen Leib, dass es mit der oft beschworenen Rationalität des "Homo oeconomicus" nicht allzu weit her ist. Die Ergebnisse dieser Tests erlauben auch Rückschlüsse über die Gestaltung von Handelsplattformen im Internet.
