Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI) coordinates work package on fertilizers from recycled urban and agricultural sources
Within the next three years scientists of the Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI) in Brunswick, Germany will coordinate a work package in the recently started EU-project called PROMISE. The PROMISE-project has been established within the framework of the BONUS-programme and is funded jointly by the German Ministry of Education and Research (via the PTJ) and the European Union under the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7). The JKI-coordinated work package “Safe & sound fertilizers from recycled urban and agricultural sources” has a budget of 118.000 Euro. Research in this work package includes the assessment of the contamination of secondary P-fertilizer materials such as biogas digestates, sewage sludges or manure and the influence of different processing steps on these contaminants. The P-fertilizer materials are likely to be contaminated with antibiotics, zoonoses and heavy metals.
PROMISE is concerned with the P-cycles in the Baltic Sea Region. http://www.bonusportal.org/bonus_projects/innovation_projects/promise Scientists from Germany, Sweden and Finnland are cooperating in this project, that aims to provide strategies and tools to reduce the input of hazardous contaminants caused by fertilizer applications in agriculture. The project covers different aspects, which imply the sustainable and efficient production of P fertilizers by recycling adequate P-rich sources. The project also aims to enhance the development of innovative technology and introduce these technologies to the market.
