Prof. Wladimir Stefanowitsch Litwinenko is to be presented today with an honorary doctorate by the Faculty for Geosciences, Geotechnics and Mining at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg for his special scientific services. “In this way, the intensive and fruitful collaboration between both universities is strengthened and an important signal is set for future projects”, says Rector Prof. Bernd Meyer.
“The honorary doctorate is, to put it another way, the crowning acknowledgement of the first representative of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute. At the same time, we are today awarding an honour to the man who has driven forward the intensive and fruitful collaboration between our two universities, and the scientific cooperation in the field of raw materials. He has brought this work to a new and high level with great personal commitment, and will continue to do so in the future”, emphasises the Rector of the Freiberg resource university, Prof. Bernd Meyer.
The international university partnership is also being honoured with the award of this doctorate. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg and the St. Petersburg Mining Institute "Gorny" have worked in close collaboration for 240 years. The scientific cooperation between Saxony and Russia began in the name of the most famous Russian universal scholar, Michail Lomonossow. The young Lomonossow was sent from the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, initially to Marburg and then from 1739 to 1740 to Freiberg. Here he studied Mineralogy, Mining and Metallurgy in the Metallurgical Laboratory run by Prof. Henckel.
Over the past 15 years, relationships between the Bergakademie Freiberg and the National University for mineral resources, "Gorny" have achieved a new quality. In 2006, both of these institutions founded the German-Russian Raw Materials Forum, and six years later the World Forum for resource universities. With the help of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute, the Lomonossow House was completed and inaugurated in Freiberg in February. Students, too, participate in the active exchange between the universities. At the moment, 57 students from Russia are studying in Freiberg; this represents the second-largest group of students at the Bergakademie. In April of this year, 27 young scientists from Freiberg were invited to an international conference in St. Petersburg – and 69 students and postgraduates from Russia are currently staying in Freiberg for the ninth Freiberg-St. Petersburg Colloquium.
Prof. Wladimir Litwinenko was born in 1955. After graduating in the field of Technical Sciences, he acted as Vice-rector of the St. Petersburg Mining Institute for many years before being elevated to the position of Rector in 1994. He is a full member of the International Academy of Sciences and a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and already has 28 patents and inventions to his name. Prof. Wladimir Litwinenko has written more than 150 scientific contributions. Over the past years, he has been focussing on the topic of the efficient utilisation of Russia’s raw material treasures.
