Seit alters her haben Menschen Schönheit mit Symmetrie verbunden. In der Wissenschaft ist dieser Zusammenhang in vielen Bereichen zu finden. Obwohl die Kategorien Schönheit und Symmetrie sich nicht in Gesetzmäßigkeiten fassen lassen, scheinen sie doch von grundsätzlicher Bedeutung. Zu diesem Thema schreibt der Bielefelder Chemiker Professor Achim Müller in der neuesten Ausgabe des amerikanischen Wissenschaftsmagazins "Science" (Band 30, vom 2.
