Operating industrial furnaces with biogenic fuels - GWI and OWI develop „biological burner“

Michael Ehring Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Oel-Waerme-Institut GmbH

Within a joint research project, the Gas und Wärme-Institut Essen e. V. (GWI) and the Oel-Waerme-Institut (OWI) develop a combined biofuel burner for the supply of industrial process heat. The burner shall not only burn low calorific gas but also fluid biogenic fuels, such as vegetable oil, in an effective and safe way while producing low emissions. Development tasks include a (partly) premixing evaporation concept for conventional and biogenic liquid fuels.

The realization shall be achieved by the construction of a demonstrator with 100 kW performance, which has to be scaled up to 300 kW within the project progression. Some challenges are expected to occur within the development such as the tendency to deposit formation from vegetable oil combustion, the avoidance of combustion instability with alternating quality and amount of gaseous fuels and the compliance with nitrogen oxide limit values for fuels with bound nitrogen. Moreover, no concepts, which can guarantee the scalability of combination burners over such a big power rating, currently exist.

Industrial process heat is usually supplied by the burning of fossil fuels, often natural gas, rarely light or heavy heating oil. But electrical heated industrial furnaces also play a major role. Biogenic fuels, in pure form or as blending component, are used so far in exceptional cases only. Another focus lies on closing material cycles by the exploitation of gases and oils occurring in industrial processes as fuel.

The use of biogenic fuels can not only be seen as a contribution to climate protection but also as an opportunity to a higher security of supply as well as a way to become independent from fossil raw material imports. In addition to that, small and medium-sized companies, which operate various boiler- and drying plants in rural areas without natural gas infrastructure, could ensure their energy supply with renewable fuels.

    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
