Full Professorship for Dr. Wei Chen from the MDC

    Geneticist and genome researcher Dr. Wei Chen of the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz-Association (MDC) has become full professor for “Functional Genomics and Systems Biology” at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Professor Chen also heads a research group at the BIMSB in addition to the central core facility “Genomics“, which he has set up during the past few years.

    Medical systems biology integrates the latest sequencing- and other high-throughput technologies, mathematics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry and engineering to derive predictive, quantitative models for biological systems. It focuses on molecular networks of genes and proteins, their regulation and interaction with each other and their relevance in disease processes. With the application of state-of-the-art novel sequencing technologies at the BIMSB, Professor Chen has established a number of different methods to investigate the gene function and their regulation.

    Dr. Chen was born in 1972 in the People’s Republic of China. In 1993, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Xiamen University in Xiamen. He later completed a Master of Business Administration study at Southwest Jiaotong University in 2000 and in 2002 a Master of Science (MSc) in medical genetics at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. In 2002, Wei Chen received a graduate student fellowship and went as a doctoral student to the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, Germany. He completed his PhD degree in 2006. Before coming to the BIMSB at MDC Dr. Chen was head of the research group Applied Bioinformatics at the MPI for Molecular Genetics.

    The BIMSB is the systems biology program at the MDC, combining cutting-edge high-throughput technologies, experimental and theoretical sciences to elucidate gene regulatory processes. It was initiated in 2008 and is lead by Professor Nikolaus Rajewsky at the MDC. The BIMSB works closely with research institutions and networks in Berlin and beyond and is part of the Integrative Research Institute Life Sciences (IRI LS) at Humboldt-University, whose co-founders are MDC and Charité. In addition, BIMBS supports collaborations with New York University, USA, the Medical Research Council Clinical Sciences Centre (MRC CSC) in London, the university La Sapienza in Rome, Italy, and the Hebrew University Jerusalem, Israel. In 2018, the BIMSB will move to the center of Berlin, where the new BIMSB building is being constructed on the historical campus of Humboldt University.
