Interdisciplinary, binational conference on Key Cultural Concepts

Katrina Jordan Abteilung Kommunikation
Universität Passau

On 8 and 9 October, the University of Passau and Aix-Marseille-Université will hold a conference on the topic of 'Similarity in Disparity: Key Cultural Concepts in the Franco-German Context' ('Ähnlichkeit in der Differenz. Kulturelle Schlüsselbegriffe im deutsch-französischen Kontext'). The conference will take place at in Aix-en-Provence.

'Every society has certain key concepts that allude to cultural phenomena, its history, practices and cultural values. Although their complexity and ambiguity are often not visible in daily life, they are increasingly prevalent in a transnational context,' explained Professor Christoph Barmeyer of the Chair of Intercultural Communication. Professor Barmeyer is organising the conference together with his French colleagues at Aix-Marseille Université, Dr Catherine Teissier and Professor Nicole Colin. 'This is all the more evident, in that there are subtle shifts in the meaning and interpretation of these concepts. For a better understanding and improved European co-operation, it is essential that the importance of these key concepts be known to allow for their "correct" interpretation.'

The interdisciplinary conference is expected to bring high-calibre German and French academics to Aix-en-Provence to contrast, debate and analyse core concepts from the areas of culture, society, economy and the mass media. Its aim is to serve as an intercultural platform for the exchange of ideas, to further mutual understanding and to generate ideas for the future direction of this field of study. As these concepts are essential for an intra-European understanding and co-operation, the contrasts highlighted between France and Germany are intended as an exemplary starting point: in future, the exploration of important key concepts should extend beyond France and Germany and include south, east and north-European societies.

The conference is intended not only for higher education teachers and doctoral candidates, but also for students, particularly those studying the Franco-German ICBS/LEA double Master's programme between Aix-Marseille-Université and the University of Passau. The double degree programme has been supervised by the organisers, Christoph Barmeyer and Catherine Teissier since 2012 in collaboration with students Antje Jansen (Aix) and Sebastian Öttl (Passau), who will be speaking at the conference.

Although it was originally planned that the conference take place at the University of Passau in June 2013, it had to be cancelled due to the severe flooding that hit Passau. This time it will be held at Aix-Marseille-Université, one of the oldest and closest exchange partners of the University of Passau.

The conference is supported by numerous French organisations, the Franco-German University and the Bayerisch-Französisches Hochschulzentrum (Franco-Bavarian Centre for University Cooperation).
