Prof. Dr. Hildegard Westphal, Director of the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), was re-elected for two more years in office as academic vice president of the Leibniz Association. During their 21st annual meeting in Berlin at the end of November the majority of the members of the Leibniz Association voted for Prof. Westphal. As one of three academic vice presidents she is focusing on internationalisation and the training of young scientists. Prof. Westphal has held this position since November 2011.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kleiner, President of the Leibniz Association, said: “I am happy that Hildegard Westphal continues to be at my side as vice president and member of the board. During the last four years she has successfully represented the Leibniz Association with great commitment whilst building and strengthening our international collaborations.”

Prof. Westphal is looking forward to continue to support the Leibniz Association as vice president on the international stage.

Hildegard Westphal (born 1968) has been the director of the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) since December 2010. She is at the same time head of the Department of Biogeochemistry and Geology and of the workgroup Geoecology and Carbonate Sedimentology. At the University of Bremen she holds the Professorship for Geology of the Tropics. Hildegard Westphal is, amongst others, a member of the Foundation Board of the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK), a member of Jacobs University’s Board of Governors and a member of the Board of Trustees of the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. From 2005 to 2010 she was a member of the Junge Akademie. Prof. Westphal was awarded the Albert Maucher Prize by the German Research Foundation and the Hans Cloos Prize by the German Geologische Vereinigung. Since November 2011 she has held the post of academic vice president of the Leibniz Association with responsibility for internationalisation.

About the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT):
Since 1991 the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) has dedicated its research and training to the better understanding of coastal ecosystems in the tropics. The ZMT focuses on the structure and functioning of these habitats, their response to anthropogenic and natural influences and the use of resources. In close cooperation with partners in the tropics, the ZMT leads interdisciplinary projects combining natural and social sciences. Scientists at the ZMT also support the development of expertise and structures in its partner countries to allow for sustainable coastal zone management. In collaboration with the University of Bremen, Jacobs University and the University of Oldenburg the institute trains students and young scientists from all over the world in marine tropical ecology. More than 200 members of staff, students and guest researchers are currently working at the ZMT. See also: http://www.leibniz-zmt.de

    About the Leibniz Association
The Leibniz Association connects 89 independent research institutions that range in focus from the natural, engineering and environmental sciences via economics, spatial and social sciences to the humanities. Leibniz institutes address issues of social, economic and ecological relevance. They conduct knowledge-driven and applied basic research, maintain scientific infrastructure and provide research-based services. The Leibniz Association identifies focus areas for knowledge transfer to policy-makers, academia, business and the public. Leibniz institutions collaborate intensively with universities – in the form of “Leibniz ScienceCampi” (thematic partnerships between university and non-university research institutes), for example – as well as with industry and other partners at home and abroad. They are subject to an independent evaluation procedure that is unparalleled in its transparency. Due to the importance of the institutions for the country as a whole, they are funded jointly by the Federation and the Länder, employing some 18,100 individuals, including 9,200 researchers. The entire budget of all the institutes is approximately 1.64 billion EUR. http://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de
