Library appoints first professor in the field of Research and Development / Research Projects on Visual Analytics and Multimedia Retrieval

HANNOVER, 8 December 2015 – Professor Dr. Ralph Ewerth started his activities as a professor of “Visual Analytics” at the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) and Leibniz Universität Hannover at the start of November 2015. The 43-year-old will lead the Research Group “Visual Analytics” in the area of Research and Development at the library. He and his staff will conduct joint research into topics such as multimedia retrieval and usability.

“The aim of my research work is to develop useful exploration and search options in large media collections for users of digital libraries,” stated Professor Dr. Ralph Ewerth. In his activities at TIB, he will focus on exploring machine learning methods for mining media and research data, new forms of visualisation and representation for volumes of data, and interactive search methods in media and research data. A special emphasis will be placed on deep learning and adaptive learning methods, which can easily be transferred to new application domains.

Professor Dr. Ralph Ewerth, born in 1972, studied Computer Science with Psychology as a minor subject in Frankfurt am Main and Marburg. After obtaining a PhD in Marburg (2008) on the topic of “Robust video content analysis via transductive learning methods”, he was responsible for the research area of Multimedia Computing at the Distributed Systems Group of Marburg University from 2008 to 2012. He was Professor of Digital Image Processing and Media Technology at the Jena University of Applied Sciences from 2012 to 2015, and Vice Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from the beginning of 2015.

    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
