TIB supports Leibniz Publishing Fund

Dr. Sandra Niemeyer Kommunikation und Marketing
Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB)

TIB operates Leibniz Association Publishing Fund in cooperation with ZB MED and ZBW

The beginning of January marked the start of the Leibniz Publishing Fund. By establishing this fund, the Leibniz Association supports the idea of Open Access and seeks to increase the proportion of Open Access scientific publications. A total of €200,000 is earmarked for the Leibniz Publishing Fund in 2016, funded by resources from the Strategy Fund of Leibniz Association Executive Board. Costs incurred by authors from Leibniz institutions for publishing articles in Open Access journals can be covered by the fund.

The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) takes the lead in operating the Leibniz Publishing Fund in cooperation with its two partners ZB MED – German National Library of Medicine and ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences. All three partners are involved in examining applications to the fund and provide advice to applicants. In addition, TIB is responsible for the financial management of applications and the fund. Particular emphasis will be placed on the conceptual further development of the Publishing Fund with a view to its permanent adoption.

“By making an active contribution to the Leibniz Publishing Fund, we wish to emphasise our Open Access orientation and provide support to Leibniz institutions and their libraries in their Open Access work,” stated Uwe Rosemann, Director of TIB. The library has been committed to Open Access for years – for example, by negotiating licences, funding Open Access within various projects and operating a repository for Leibniz Universität Hannover. In the Leibniz Association, TIB is involved in the LeibnizOpen portal and in Open Access committees. TIB will continue to advocate Open Access in the future, calling for the creation of efficient publishing processes and sustainable funding, for instance.
