Scientific Study of Long-Jumper Markus Rehm

Sabine Maas Presse und Kommunikation
Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln

A scientific research study of below-knee amputee long jumper and Paralympic champion Markus Rehm is about to begin as the subject of a Japanese TV programme. The goal of the Japanese TV programme is to try to explain why Markus Rehm jumps so much further than other athletes with a similar disability and can also compete with the best non-amputee jumpers in the world.

Subsequent to the TV programme, an international group of scientists will complete additional studies. They will measure and analyse data from Markus Rehm and similar calibre athletes to better understand his performance and compare his performance to that of non-amputee athletes. Further, the analyses of these data will allow the scientists to objectively consider whether the advantage alleged by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), among others, exists.

The international study is conducted jointly by the Institute for Biomechanics and Orthopaedics at the German Sports University Cologne, Germany (Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Potthast), the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology/Human Informatics Research Institute, Tokyo, Japan (Dr Hiroaki Hobara) and the University of Colorado Boulder, Department of Integrative Physiology, USA (Dr Alena M Grabowski).

Markus Rehm and the German Disabled Sports Association hope to gain clarification from the results about whether it will be possible in the future for athletes with amputations to compete at national and international athletics competitions. The results will be presented at the beginning of June in Cologne.
