Im internationalen CWTS Hochschulranking 2016 der Leiden University erzielte die Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU) in den Geowissenschaften, der Physik und den Sozialwissenschaften sehr gute Ergebnisse. Sie erreichte in diesen Fächern jeweils einen Platz unter den TOP 10 der gerankten deutschen Hochschulen und ist auch europaweit in der Spitzengruppe vertreten.
Das CWTS Leiden Ranking wird seit 2007 jährlich vom Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) der Universität Leiden (NL) veröffentlicht. Das international bekannte forschungsorientierte Hochschulranking basiert ausschließlich auf Publikationsanalysen der weltweit 750 forschungsstärksten Hochschulen auf Grundlage der Publikationsdatenbank Web of Science.
