From June 1, 2016, our institute is excited to welcome a new research group: Headed by Boran Kartal, the new group is dedicated to the field of microbial physiology. It is located in the Biogeochemistry Department, headed by Marcel Kuypers.
„In short, I am interested in the microorganisms that mediate the nitrogen and carbon cycles“, says Kartal. „I want to investigate and understand the ecology, physiology and biochemistry of anaerobic microorganisms, and eventually fathom possible applications of our results. Further, I have the ultimate aim to discover new processes that are thermodynamically feasible, yet unknown.”
Boran Kartal joins us from the Netherlands. He carried out his Ph.D. at the Radboud University Nijmegen, focusing on the ecology and physiology of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria. Since 2010, Kartal held a position as an assistant professor in Nijmegen.
“With his excellent expertise and know-how, Boran Kartal will greatly contribute to our research at the MPI in Bremen”, director Marcel Kuypers looks forward to the new arrival. “Together, we will seek and find answers to many exciting questions.”
“I am looking forward to establish my own group at the MPI in Bremen and work in an environment that has been producing excellent science as long as I have been in the scientific community myself”, says Kartal. “I am also looking forward to bringing in my expertise to the Institute and collaborating with the already existing groups in the MPI family embedded in an excellent infrastructure.”
