Industrial furnaces can be operated more efficiently and economically

Michael Ehring Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Oel-Waerme-Institut GmbH

In a joint project the e-flox GmbH, the Institute of Combustion and Power Plant Technology (IFK) of the University of Stuttgart as well as the OWI Oel-Waerme-Institute develop a novel combustion approach for the use of different liquid and biogenic fuels by applying the FLOX-concept. The FLOX-concept is already successfully used in the gas firing technology for thermal process equipment. Within the FLOX concept a flameless oxidation or combustion of fuel takes place and hence the name of the concept. Industrial furnaces and firing systems driven by liquid fuels could be even more efficient, cost-effective and combined with low-emission by using the FLOX-concept.

Within the present research project several technical challenges need to be overcome. Compared to gaseous fuels, liquid fuels first need to be atomized and evaporated. Therefore, the development of a new burner is necessary, which allows atomization and mixing as well as the establishment of a stable FLOX-flame despite of low ignition temperatures of liquid fuels. Moreover, the usage of biogenic fuels (for instance vegetable oils and pyrolysis oils) imposes particular demands on the procedure of atomization due to their higher viscosity. One of the outcomes of the project will be a FLOX-burner which will be industrial usable and commercially distributed.

Existing burners for liquid fuels have brought a reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx), but their potential is exhausted. Especially with regard to the usage of alternative fuels, new solutions are necessary. The benefits of the FLOX-concept include a high fuel flexibility, which enables the usage of fuels that do not burn stable in conventional burners. Furthermore, within the FLOX-concept resulting NOx-concentrations in exhaust gas are low, so that the DeNOx systems and external exhaust gas recirculation concepts in conventional industrial boilers could be avoided, which has a positive effect on the investment and operating costs.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
