Max Planck Institut für Informatik, Saarbrücken, und Stanford University, USA, kooperieren in einem virtuellen "Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communication" / Finanzierung durch BMBF
Ein virtuelles "Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communication" beginnt am 1. Juli 2003 seine Arbeit. Koordiniert vom Max Planck Institut für Informatik in Saarbrücken, einem der führenden europäischen Institute auf dem Gebiet der Computergraphik, werden Computerwissenschaftler in enger Kooperation mit der Stanford University (USA), dem führenden Institut im Bereich der Computerwissenschaften in den USA, an gemeinsamen Projekten arbeiten. Aufgabe dieses virtuellen Zentrums ist die Forschung auf dem Gebiet des "Visual Computing and Communication", einem Schlüsselbereich der modernen Informationstechnologie. Zugleich soll damit dem akuten Mangel an qualifizierten Informatikern für die Hochschulen im Fach Informatik in Deutschland entgegen gewirkt werden. Das Zentrum und sein Forschungsprogramm wird vorerst für den Zeitraum von 2003 bis 2007 mit insgesamt 6,9 Mio. Euro durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Wissenschaft (BMBF) gefördert.
