The Student Academy Award gold medal in the category Foreign Film goes to the University of Television and Film (HFF Munich) / Alex Schaad convinces the jury with his social media thriller / Fourth Student Academy Award® for HFF Munich / HFF Munich to screen INVENTION OF TRUST during the Long Night of Munich Museums on October 15
Munich, 22. September 2016 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today honored Alex Schaad, a directing student in the Feature Film and Television Feature Department of the University of Television and Film (HFF Munich), presenting him with the Student Academy Award® gold medal in the category Foreign Film (Foreign Narrative) at the 43rd annual Student Academy Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, California.
INVENTION OF TRUST is Alex Schaad’s Film 02 project at HFF Munich – i.e. his second exercise film toward his directing degree, under Prof. Andreas Gruber. He wrote the screenplay together with his brother Dimitrij Schaad, who also plays the film lead; director of photography was HFF cinematography student Ahmed El Nagar, with HFF production department student Richard Lamprecht producing. The team is currently preparing Alex Schaad’s third HFF film, with principal photography scheduled for October in North Rhine-Westphalia.
President of HFF Munich Prof. Bettina Reitz was delighted: “I warmly congratulate Alex Schaad and his entire team for this very special honor. INVENTION OF TRUST unfolds the oppressive scenario of an unfortunately not very distant future – thus combining documentary urgency with the narrative quality and aesthetics of a narrative film.”
HFF Munich will be screening the short film as part of its program for the Long Night of Munich Museums on 15 October 2016 – for more information, go to www.hff-muenchen.de.
INVENTION OF TRUST | 29 minutes
In INVENTION OF TRUST young high school teacher Michael Gewa receives a mysterious message from a company named b.good: The organization has purchased his Internet and mobile phone data, and has drawn on this digital fingerprint to assign him a rating – regarding his personal and professional skills, and his private relationship. When he refuses their offer, for a monthly fee, to keep the rating confidential, things quickly spiral out of control. Michael Gewa is forced to fight for his reputation, in the eyes of friends, colleagues and pupils – as he struggles to restore his own injured trust in his fellow human beings.
Student Academy Awards
With its 43rd presentation of the Student Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues its tradition of honoring young cinematic talent. And this year the Academy saw a record number of applications for the Student Academy Awards: 1,749 films by young filmmakers from the US and around the world.
In the past, applications from outside the US were eligible for only a single category – Foreign Film. This year, however, the Academy extended the possibilities for young film talent from around the world: For the first time, they were invited to submit works in the subcategories narrative film, documentary, and animation. Two years ago, the student gold medal of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences went to HFF Munich for Lennart Ruff’s graduation film NOCEBO. Previous Student Oscars® went to Florian Gallenberger’s QUIERO SER, in 2000, which went on to garner the Academy’s short film award, as well; and to Katja von Garnier for ABGESCHMINKT, in 1994. This year’s award thus takes HFF Munich’s tally to four Student Academy Awards®.
