In the context of its current future campaign on the theme of “Smart Cities”, the Federal Min-istry of Education and Research (BMBF) asked for ideas to be sent in to solve the problem of waste disposal in Indian cities. Poonam Bir Kasturi convinced the German-Indian jury with her idea of a “Community Composter”. The award ceremony took place at the CityScapes conference of the German Research and Innovation Forum (DWIH) in New Delhi on 29 September.
“From waste to resource – how can we turn garbage into gold?” This was the question which the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) asked participants from Germany and India. A total of 83 ideas were submitted during the 6-week application phase via the innovation platform http://www.innovationskraftwerk.de of the regional initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”. Poonam Bir Kasturi prevailed over her rivals with her idea of a composter which turns organic waste into high-nutrient fertiliser. A top-class jury representing the fields of German and Indian politics, business and science evaluated the ideas of how to deal with the waste problem in Indian cities.
The prize winner received her award at the awards ceremony held as part of the DWIH City-Scapes conference in New Delhi on 29 September. The certificate was handed to her by Stephan Lanzinger, Science Counsellor of the German Embassy New Delhi, who also thanked her for her outstanding commitment. Her innovative idea is rewarded with a trip to visit research institutions in Germany. The objective of this trip is to develop the idea of the “Community Composter” further by networking and establishing new partnerships, thus in-creasing its potential for realisation. The trip is due to take place in early 2017.
The BMBF future campaign “Shaping The Future – Building the City of Tomorrow”
The ideas competition marked the start of the BMBF’s international campaign “City of the Future”. This campaign focuses on the question of how cities can be maintained as viable, sustainable living spaces. The “Shaping the Future – Building the City of Tomorrow“ campaign builds on the theme of the national Year of Science 2015 and will continue the City of the Future concept at an international level. The countries that are the main focus of the campaign are China, India, Vietnam, Colombia and the USA. The DLR Project Management Agency is managing the campaign on behalf of the BMBF. The goal is to stimulate international networking and make Germany even more well-known and visible as a hub of international research and innovation under the brand “Research in Germany – Land of Ideas”.
