German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) adopts Open Access Policy

Dr. Sandra Niemeyer Kommunikation und Marketing
Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB)

Adherence to Open Access: TIB supports Open Access publications by its employees

HANNOVER, 21 December 2016 – In the future, scholarly publications and research results generated by employees of the Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – German National Library of Science and Technology in Hannover should be published in Open Access – i.e. openly accessible – to a greater extent than in the past. This is the essence of the Open Access Policy whose implementation has now been recommended by the Scientific Advisory Council of TIB. As such, the library wishes to make a further contribution to the Open Access transformation by also encouraging its employees to publish their research results Open Access.

“TIB is already engaged in many Open Access projects. In light of TIB’s increasing research and publication output, we would also like to underscore our Open Access orientation in our colleagues’ publications,” stated Dr. Irina Sens, Interim Director of TIB. The library provides several kinds of support to its employees in publishing Open Access, such as offering the possibility to receive funding via TIB’s own publishing fund and providing extensive advice on Open Access publications. In the future, TIB will also make its own teaching material and other information accessible under a CC BY licence.

TIB has been advocating Open Access for years – for example, by funding a variety of Open Access projects, by operating a repository for Leibniz Universität Hannover, and by being involved in Open Access committees. It also negotiates Open Access clauses in contracts with publishers and provides its own catalogue metadata under CC0 for reuse. As a member of the Leibniz Association, TIB is involved in the LeibnizOpen portal and operates the Leibniz publishing fund.
