Research into cross-border energy supplies in the Danube/Moldau region

Dipl. Journalistin, MBA Diana Feuerer Hochschulkommunikation und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg

The Bavarian/Czech “CrossEnergy” joint project of OTH Regensburg, TH Deggendorf and the University of West Bohemia receives funding totalling one million euros.

More Europe for the energy industry: The recently launched "CrossEnergy" research project of a team of multidisciplinary researchers will contribute to a common cross-border energy infrastructure in the Danube/Moldau region. The project’s partners are OTH Regensburg, the Deggendorf University of Applied Sciences and the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen which is heading the project and is represented by two of its faculties. A first kick-off meeting for the project was held in Pilsen on Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th of February. Those attending the launch meeting included Prof. Dr.-Ing. Oliver Brückl, joint head of the research project and scientific director of the Regensburg Center of Energy and Resources (RCER) at OTH Regensburg, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Dorner from the Deggendorf University of Applied Sciences and head of the Freyung Technology Campus, and from the University of West Bohemia Professor Dr. Daniel Georgiev, Dr. Martin Střelec and Dr. Miloslava Tesařová.

One of the aims of the project is to develop advanced software tools to support decisions in planning and using electrical networks of distribution system operators, public utility companies, authorities, political decision-makers and the general public. Project put strong emphasis on regional aspects considering cross-border cooperation as well as demographic, technology and regulatory trends.

For example, which technology should be built - a wind turbine, a solar panel system or a biogas plant? Which technology delivers the most added value for the people living in the Danube/Moldau region? Which is the most suitable site? This web-based application can be used to ‘act out’ the effects of the various different scenarios so that the best possible decision can be taken. “One of the essential aspects of the project for us is to address the different legal requirements that exist in Bavaria and the Czech Republic” according to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Brückl from OTH Regensburg.

Over a period of three years the research project will be funded by the “Program for Cross-Border Cooperation between Bavaria and the Czech Republic” and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with an amount totalling almost one million euros. The project is sponsored by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology and the Czech Ministry of Regional Development.
