Completing a Part-Time Program in Management and Expanding Leadership Skills

MBA Volker Stößel Media Relations
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

HHL graduate Hendrik Schmidt about the transfer from theory to practice in the part-time Master in Management (M.Sc.)

It is high season currently for Hendrik Schmidt. Publicly traded companies such as Bayer or Linde are having their annual general meetings. Schmidt attends these meetings of shareholders, where leadership has to face the questions of the owners, to exercise the voting rights of the clients of one of Europe's largest investment companies as a fiduciary. The tasks of this corporate governance expert, who works at investment company Deutsche Asset Management in Frankfurt, include in-depth business analyses as well as ensuring the correct exercise of the voting rights and ongoing discussions with the management and supervisory boards of the portfolio companies. At the meetings, Schmidt also takes a position on governance issues, such as the executive board remuneration, transparency, election and discharge of the executive and supervisory boards, or significant transactions and questions the members of the executive and supervisory boards.

"With the part-time Master in Management, I feel I am perfectly trained."

The 26-year-old feels he is well-prepared for these tasks. Just last year, he completed the Part-Time Master in Management Program (M.Sc.) at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management while working at his position as Assistant of the Supervisory Board. The graduate, who was born in Bad Segeberg, benefitted from his academic education both on a professional and personal level. "While completing the part-time M.Sc., I obtained a more in-depth understanding of and an interest in strategic management and leadership questions. Moreover, I was able to raise my profile in the fields of accounting and corporate finance," says Schmidt. He especially benefitted from the combination of theory and practice and the constant reconciliation with real-life applicability.
On a personal level, Schmidt was able to further develop his leadership skills, expand his network and share experiences "beyond his own nose" while studying at HHL. Hendrik Schmidt concludes, "With the part-time Master in Management, I feel I am perfectly trained."

    Ethical and moral responsibility

He can incorporate many aspects of the part-time program into his everyday working life. "There are always connections regarding the soft skills in the field of project management, presentations and as a part of cross-department cooperation," comments Schmidt. He also took away the ethical and moral responsibility which each stakeholder has in the economic cycle from the HHL program.
It is precisely this responsibility which corporate governance expert Schmidt will have when he attends the annual general meeting for Linde tomorrow. While a proposed merger worth billions of the DAX-listed group from Munich is not on the agenda, there are a few critical questions in this connection to which Hendrik Schmidt expects answers.
