The IoT Innovation and Networking Days, organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT, were held on Fraunhofer's Schloss Birlinghoven campus, St. Augustin, on May 22 and 23, 2017. More than 80 experts from industry and academia came to Schloss Birlinghoven to discuss the latest developments in the “Internet of Things” field.

18 speakers from leading international manufacturers and research institutes gave presentations about state-of-the-art Internet of Things (IoT) applications in sustainable process industries, smart grids and smart cities.

The attendees learned about current research topics and ongoing research and industrial development projects, and discussed, in a World Café format, the latest innovations and R&D trend in IoT-related fields like Big Data analytics, blockchains and large-scale cyber-physical systems. The Networking Buffet in the evening provided ample opportunity to elaborate on the afternoon discussions and to establish new contacts in a relaxed setting.

This year’s event was organized in the scope of the “EXCELL – Actions for Excellence in Smart Cyber-Physical Systems Applications Through Exploitation of Big Data in the Context of Production Control And Logistics” project, a EU-funded twinning project fostering international networking and sharing of research expertise on a European level. In the EXCELL project, Fraunhofer FIT's department User-Centered Ubiquitous Computing contributes to the project's topics Cyber-Physical Systems, Human-System Interaction and IoT applications in business. The department's R&D also focuses on IoT technologies and IoT applications in smart factories and sustainable process industries, smart grids and smart cities.

Future IoT Innovation Days will be organized alternately by Fraunhofer FIT and our Italian R&D partner Istituto Superiore Mario Boella – ISMB, Torino.
