Educational Technologies: New professorship explores future field of research

Philip Stirm Referat Kommunikation
Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung

Professor Dr. Hendrik Drachsler is the newly appointed professor for Computer Science focusing on Educational Technologies at the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) and the Goethe University Frankfurt. By this joint appointment, both institutions are strengthening German research on digitisation in education.

Why is it necessary to ban mobile phones and other mobile devices from the classroom? Shouldn’t they rather be creatively used in 21st century classrooms? Why not consider using an app instead of a traditional paper-based format for communicating time schedules, exam results or times of absence among tutors, students and even the parents? Doesn’t Augmented Reality present an ideal way to enrich the learning experiences of school and university students? “Educational Technologies offer many opportunities to make education more efficient, effective or just more fun and attractive“, says Professor Dr. Hendrik Drachsler. As the newly appointed Professor for Computer Science focusing on Educational Technologies at the German Institute for International Educational Research (Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung – DIPF) and the Goethe University Frankfurt he will be investigating this future field of research.

Professor Drachsler explains: “Internationally, the field of Educational Technologies has already been extensively researched in recent years. The professorship aims to bring Germany closer to the top performers in this field.” The researcher will take all areas of education into perspective and also investigate learning outside the university and at the workplace. A focus will be on “Learning Analytics“, i.e. the analysis of data from educational processes, aiming to gain new insights into the education system and individual learning processes, which also allows to provide more personalised learning experiences.

At DIPF, the professorship is allocated to the Information Center for Education (Informationszentrum Bildung – IZB). It is moreover tied into the operations of the interdisciplinary, interdepartmental Centre for Technology Based Assessment (TBA). At the Goethe University, the professorship is appointed to the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics. Thereby, the University and DIPF are extending their long-standing co-operation to another thematic field.

The IZB develops and maintains digital infrastructure services for the entire area of education, e.g. the German Education Server, the German Education Portal and the Research Data Centre for Education. The TBA Centre puts into practice innovative computer-based procedures to assess and analyse learning outcomes. Professor Dr. Marc Rittberger, Deputy Executive Director of DIPF and Director of the Information Center for Education, explains the objectives of this joint new appointment: “Together with the Goethe University, we wish to expand research on the digitisation of education and further develop our infrastructures accordingly. We are delighted to have won an internationally distinguished expert such as Professor Drachsler for this task.”

Professor Dr. Mirjam Minor, Executive Director of the Faculty for Computer Science (Institut für Informatik – IfI), is pleased: “Professor Drachsler is one of the internationally renowned researchers in the area of Learning Analytics and will strengthen our research in the area of Data Science. The co-operation of IfI with the TBA Centre opens up excellent opportunities for new applications of Educational Technologies. Professor Drachsler‘s teaching activities will provide a valuable addition to our study courses.”

Hendrik Drachsler previously held a professorship for “Technology-Enhanced Learning“ at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, and he was Associate Professor for “Learning Analytics“ at the Open University of the Netherlands. He chairs the Special Interest Group for “Data-driven Research and Learning Analytics“ of the European Association of Technology Enhanced Learning (EATEL) and he is an elected board member of the Society of Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR). Drachsler holds a doctorate in Computer Science. He was primary investigator of various Dutch and European research projects.
