The Helmholtz Association has honored five outstanding international scientists with the Helmholtz International Fellow Award. These scientists have earned special distinction in areas of research relevant to the Helmholtz Association’s work. The purpose of the award is to facilitate deeper collaboration with these researchers. The senior scientists will each receive €20,000 in prize money, as well as an invitation to be a visiting research fellow at one or more Helmholtz Centers.
In the words of Helmholtz President Otmar D. Wiestler, “International partnerships are a major component of our strategy. In the Helmholtz Association’s complex areas of research, it has become increasingly important to form networks with leading researchers from abroad. For this reason, I am delighted to say that once again, in the first round of 2017 applications, we are able to confer this prize on outstanding researchers. I warmly congratulate the awardees and look forward to our future collaboration.”
The first award was conferred in 2012, financed by the Initiative and Networking Fund of the President of the Helmholtz Association. The recipients of the award are nominated by Helmholtz institutions and chosen twice a year by the Helmholtz Executive Committee. The five scientists chosen in the current round of nominations come from the United States, Greece, New Zealand, and France. Many recipients of the Helmholtz International Fellow Award have already worked closely with the Helmholtz Centers. In their own countries, the Fellows also act as ambassadors, promoting cooperation between their home institutions and the Helmholtz Association.
