Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg

The prestigious Shanghai Ranking has placed the University of Würzburg among the world’s top 200 universities – as one of four Bavarian and 15 German universities.

Since 2003 Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been presenting its “Academic Ranking of Universities Worldwide”, better known as Shanghai Ranking. The latest edition was published online on August 15, 2017. http://www.shanghairanking.com

In the overall result of the 2017 Shanghai Ranking, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) is again listed among the top 200 universities in the world and among the top 15 in Germany. The other Bavarian universities represented in this category are the two Munich universities and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. Front runners of the ranking are the US universities Harvard and Stanford as well as the University of Cambridge (UK).

    Results of individual fields

In the comparison of single academic fields as well, JMU has again achieved very good results. In Biology and Chemistry, for example, the Shanghai Ranking has placed the University among the 150 leading universities of the world. In Computer Science, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physics, and Psychology, Würzburg is ranked as one of the top 200 universities worldwide.

    Facts about the Shanghai Ranking

To assess the research output of universities, the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University uses six parameters. They include the number of Nobel Prize winners and scientists who have received other high-caliber awards, the number of articles published in “Nature” and “Science”, and the number of highly-cited researchers. On the basis of these criteria the Shanghai Ranking compares over 1,300 universities; the results of the top 500 are published annually.

    Results of other rankings

Individual rankings reflect only some segments of JMU’s performance. Alongside the aforementioned areas, other subjects also constantly achieve very good results in rankings. Psychology, Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, German Studies, and Educational Science, for example, have all got high scores /have all scored high in rankings produced by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE, Gütersloh, Germany). In a comparison conducted by the German news magazine Focus, the subjects Biology, Psychology, and Medicine likewise passed with flying colors.
