Im aktuellen Ranking der weltweiten Software-Engineering-Forschungsgruppen erzielt das Fraunhofer-Institut Experimentelles Software Engineering (IESE) einen hervorragenden 6. Platz. In einer der nächsten Ausgaben der angesehenen Fachzeitschrift "The Journal of Systems and Software" wird das Forschungs-Ranking 2003 veröffentlicht. Die Rangliste wird aufgrund der Anzahl von Publikationen in den international führenden Fachjournalen erstellt.
Das IESE ist die einzige deutsche Organisation unter den Top 15. Vor dem IESE, das aus der Arbeitsgruppe "Software Engineering" von Prof. Dr. Dieter Rombach, Fachbereich Informatik der Universität Kaiserslautern, hervorgegangen ist, liegen nur Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), National Chiao Tung University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Bell Labs Lucent sowie National University of Singapore.
