12th International Symposium on Electrokinetics

Kerstin Wustrack Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e. V.

Electrosurface Phenomena in Advanced Materials and Soft Matter

What happens when a droplet of liquid alkali metal hits a water surface?
The nearly 100 participants of the 12th International Symposium on Electrokinetics from all around the globe (ELKIN 2017, held September 10-12, 2017, at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden, IPF) learned about the plethora of the involved ionization processes, charge distribution and phase transition phenomena in a breath-taking lecture given by Pavel Jungwirth (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague, “Coulomb Explosion during the Early Stages of the Reaction of Alkali Metals with Water”) reporting high speed camera images as well as results of molecular dynamic simulations.

The ELKIN 2017 symposium reflected recent progress in both theoretical and experimental approaches to electrosurface phenomena in advanced materials and soft matter. Invited and contributed lectures given by globally leading scientists covered an array of topics ranging from basic principles of electrokinetic phenomena, molecular theories, and electrokinetic assembly over ion-specific effects in materials sciences and charge regulation, binding and electrokinetics in living matter to electrokinetics in bioanalytical applications and bioseparation (for full program see www.elkin2017.org).

The participants of the symposium were particularly pleased to meet Johannes Lyklema (Wageningen University, The Netherlands), a key figure of colloid and interface science and chairman of the ELKIN conference series for many years.
It was generally felt that the presentations and discussions during and after the conference massively helped to create bridges between different approaches and fields of science, and to stimulate future scientific collaboration.
The next symposium of the ELKIN series is planned to be held in 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
