Sharing ideas for tomorrow's digital communities

Morgenstadt Workshop 2017 provides a creative platform for urban Innovation.
The digital transformation of communal life calls for cross-sectoral thinking and solutions. The second edition of the Morgenstadt Workshop, which is to be held in Stuttgart in November 2017 and is organized by Fraunhofer IAO and Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of the Interior, Digitisation and Migration, offers a platform with many creative formats that will enable all stakeholders involved in urban and regional development to contribute their own questions and solutions to the discussion and develop them further.

Communities are about to undergo a profound transformation on multiple levels, driven by the energy and mobility transition, demographic change, and increasing digitalization. To manage this multifaceted process, all players must take a broad view of their respective plans for the future. Instead of treating each issue in isolation, a holistic approach is required which embraces the entire urban context and permits systematic development. An innovative event format proposed by Fraunhofer IAO and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, Digitisation and Migration provides the ideal debating platform. Following its successful premiere last year, the Morgenstadt Workshop is being held again on November 29 and 30, 2017. Urban, suburban and rural municipalities, government agencies, startups, established companies, students and anyone else who wishes to shape tomorrow’s digital communities are invited to contribute their questions and experience, or even stage their own events as part of the workshop.

Something for everyone: Networking for a more connected city

The event provides networking opportunities for established companies and startups that will enable them to receive direct feedback on their concepts and find new partners for the projects they have in mind. For urban, suburban and rural municipalities, it is an occasion to gain valuable insights into the latest research developments, share experience of the challenges they face, and discover new use cases, technologies and services. Students and members of the general public can also contribute their ideas and express their wishes, enabling local governments and the business community to see the situation from the end user’s point of view. This aim is supported by numerous platforms including creativity workshops, speed meetings, and an accompanying exhibition.

Smart City Makeathon: A creative space for people who think outside the box

The idea was taken up so enthusiastically last year that not one but three Smart City Makeathons, each devoted to a different topic, will be held as side events to this year’s workshop on November 28 and 29, 2017. Participants have access to numerous workstations where they can conceptualize, design and develop prototypes of new, creative applications for connected urban development, with the support of experts in the field and experienced researchers. Light and photonics is a major topic of interest, because many applications can be developed for photonics technology using a photonics toolkit. After a round of lightning talks, in which experts propose new stimulating ideas, teams will be formed to think through and investigate areas of common interest, and come up with suitable design approaches and IT solutions. The results will be presented on the first day of the Morgenstadt Workshop on November 29, when prizes will be awarded for the best ideas by Baden-Württemberg’s Minister of the Interior, Thomas Strobl.
Interested local authorities, companies and startups have until the end of September 2017 to submit their ideas and book slots in the agenda for the upcoming Morgenstadt Workshop.
