Monitoring trends in the environmental technology market

Fraunhofer IAO charts a roadmap to identify future environmental technology trends

To identify the most promising trends in the lead markets “water”, “air” and “circular economy” on behalf of the German State of Baden-Württemberg, Fraunhofer IAO has developed a roadmap for the environmental technology sector in collaboration with the State Agency for Environmental Technologies and Resource Efficiency (UTBW) and the Institute for Industrial Ecology (INEC) at Pforzheim University.

Environmental technology and resource efficiency is a key sector in the German State of Baden-Württemberg. To boost the regional economy with appropriate measures and maintain the state’s strong position in this growth market, the State Agency UTBW has initiated a project to develop a roadmap for environmental technology in collaboration with Fraunhofer IAO and the Institute for Industrial Ecology (INEC) at Pforzheim University. The foresight study offers relevant stakeholders in Baden-Württemberg, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), R&D institutions and policymakers, an overview of expected technology trends in the lead markets “water”, “air” and “circular economy,” visualized in the form of a roadmap.

What trends will generate new market opportunities?

The roadmap provides an assessment of the environmental technologies most likely to dominate the market in the coming years. The identified market segments include waste water treatment, water procurement, waste processing, and waste air purification. A total of 31 market and technology trends with a time horizon of fifteen years were derived from the research and documented in factsheets. The identified trends, which were validated by experts, will serve as guidance for the development of new products or business areas.

“Fraunhofer IAO and the Institute for Industrial Ecology (INEC) at Pforzheim University were the ideal partners in our project to develop a roadmap focusing on environmental technologies. Fraunhofer IAO’s expertise in road-mapping methodologies combined with INEC’s extensive experience in sustainability research perfectly complemented the state agency’s knowledge of the environmental technology market in Baden-Württemberg. The resulting roadmap will enable us to provide local companies, especially SMEs, with an overview of the expected trends in the environmental technology market. This in turn will help us maintain Baden-Württemberg’s position as a leader in the field of environmental technology and resource efficiency,” says UTBW project manager Dr. Anette Zimmermann.

The roadmap for environmental technology forms part of Baden-Württemberg’s regional economic development strategy. The results of the road-mapping project will be presented at the 6th Congress for Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy (KONGRESS BW) in Stuttgart on October 18 and 19, 2018. In addition to the print version of the trend factsheets, a digital app enabling interested parties to obtain a customized view of the information will also be presented at the congress. The state agency UTBW can provide direct access to the roadmap on request.
