Berlin, 26.04.2018. Today is Girls' Day or Girls' Future Day and the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) gives young female students the opportunity to experience the everyday life of a departmental research institute. For the first time this year, the Girls' Day will take place at the BAM Test Site in Horstwalde. The theme is open-air research and the girls will gain insight into BAM’s various tasks.
"We are pleased to participate again this year because Girls' Day is an integral part of the career development programme for youth at BAM," said Karin Pachaly, BAM’s equal opportunities representative. "We want to inspire girls to consider MINT-professions and show them just how exciting research can be." The available slots for participation were in high-demand and were all filled within the first few days.
Fire and flame for research
The girls will see fire and drop tests at BAM’s test site. Together with researchers from the division Constructive Fire and Explosion Safety for Gases they will investigate the dangers of poor handling of deodorant, hair spray etc. At the testing site the girls will simulate various everyday situations in dealing with flammable gases. They will be able to observe a possible ignition from a safe distance and analyse the consequences. This will also show them how these investigations at BAM help improve safety of everyday life.
Free-fall experiments
The division for Safety of Transport Containers division will also demonstrate hands-on research. The girls will be able to investigate the airbag effect during a drop test and evaluate their results with the help of BAM staff. Afterwards, they will visit the 36-metre-high drop tower and gain insight into the division’s current work.
Vocational training at BAM
During the Girls’ Day, the girls will also be able to hear more about BAM’s vocational training and career development programmes. Whether it is an internship, vocational training or student jobs, BAM offers young people a wide range of opportunities in engineering and science.
There are currently about 140 German and foreign Ph.D. students doing research at BAM on safety in technology and chemistry. In addition, BAM currently employs about 60 trainees.
