Brain Research: ERC Starting Grant for Neuroscientist from Basel

The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded professor Jan Gründemann one of the coveted ERC Starting Grants. The neuroscientist from the University of Basel will receive approx. 1.5 million euros over the next five years for his research project in the fields of neurophysiology and brain research.

Since January 2018 Jan Gründemann holds a professorship funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) at the Department of Biomedicine. In his ERC research project, he investigates how structural-plastic changes in nerve cells contribute to perception and learning processes. He studied human biology in Marburg, Germany, and obtained his PhD in Neuroscience from University College London in 2011. Gründemann subsequently worked as a postdoctoral fellow and Ambizione Fellow of the SNSF at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel.

Neural processing in deep brain areas

Our senses are constantly bombarded with a multitude of sensory impressions. It is unclear how and where in the brain these stimuli are filtered, integrated and processed from the environment. Gründemann and his team use modern microscopy methods to understand the neuronal coding of multisensory integration and associative learning in deeper brain regions, with a focus on associative fear learning and evidence-based decision-making.

His ERC research project “Deep brain imaging of cellular mechanisms of sensory processing and learning” aims to identify the cellular processes that are subject to experience- and learning-dependent changes at the neural network level. A special focus is on the in vivo analysis of cellular plasticity in the entry and exit pathways of nerve cells.

    ERC Starting Grants

The ERC Starting Grants are among the most renowned grants for young researchers in Europe. The ERC awards these grants for innovative basic research and promotes the independent work of talented young researchers, with the aim to establish and consolidate an own independent research group. The ERC Starting Grants are part of the European Research Framework Program Horizon 2020.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
