German Council of Science and Humanities recommends right to grant PhDs independently for ESMTBerlin

European School of Management and Technology (ESMT)

The German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) has renewed its accreditation of ESMT Berlin to grant PhDs and recommended that it be allowed to do so independently in the future. In the consistently positive report on the reaccreditation (compact procedure regarding doctorates), the council writes that ESMT “completely fulfills the requirements of an institution with a university status that is authorized to award doctorate degrees.” The internationally recognized top research achievements, the good institutional framework for research, as well as personnel play a decisive part in this success.

In the report, the Wissenschaftsrat emphasizes the business school’s international orientation, its pronounced awareness of quality assurance, and the significant increase in the number of students, which proves its success on the market. It also highlights the positive financial situation of ESMT at present and in the future. ESMT has recorded a positive net income every year since 2010. In addition, the council recognizes the global reputation of ESMT, especially highlighting executive education. In the Financial Times Executive Education Ranking, ESMT consistently ranks among the global leaders.

ESMT President Jörg Rocholl says, “We are pleased with the positive assessment of the Wissenschaftsrat. With its recommendation for independent doctoral rights, the report testifies to the successful development of ESMT.”

As a private academically oriented business school with university status, ESMT has had the right to award doctorates since 2013. It will continue to participate in the doctoral program Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science (BDPEMS). BDPEMS is a joint initiative of international scholars of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, WZB Berlin Social Research Center, and ESMT.
