Nutritional Status and Health Situation of Syrian Refugees (m/f)

Mechtild Freiin v. Münchhausen Referat für Kommunikation und Marketing
Leibniz Universität Hannover

“NutriStat” analyses nutritional status, health situation, and quality of life of Syrian refugees

In recent years, a large number of people from other cultures, especially from Syria, came to Germany. Immigrants face many challenges that also influence nutrition, health, and quality of life. Due to a different food supply, both nutrition and eating behaviour must be adapted to the new environment. Furthermore, the small amount of data available for these countries suggests that the population’s supply with certain nutrients is often inadequate. This raises the question of how to assess the nutritional and health status as well as the quality of life of new refugees (m/f) from the Middle East. The research project “NutriStat” aims to answers these questions using the example of Syria.

The cross-sectional study is led by Professor Andreas Hahn from the Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition in cooperation with Professor Dorothee Straka from Osnabrück University of Applied Science and analyses the nutritional status, health situation, and quality of life of Syrian refugees.

Participation is open to Syrian refugees between the ages of 18 and 45, who came to Germany within the last three years. The study takes place at the Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition and involves a physical examination (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.), a blood draw, and questionnaires (time required for participation: approx. 1 hour). Knowledge of German is not necessary.

If you would like to participate or would like more information about the study, please contact Feras Al Masri, Institute of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Tel.: +49 511 762 5969 (Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.), Email: almasri@nutrition.uni-hannover.de
