Max Planck Director Marie-Claire Foblets receives honorary doctorate

On Friday, 25 January 2019 the Law Faculty of the University of Uppsala awarded Max Planck Director Prof. Dr. Marie-Claire Foblets an honorary doctorate. At the award ceremony, Marie-Claire Foblets gave an address on “Facilitating cultural diversity in contemporary European societies – legal responses and their limits”. The award recognizes Foblets’ longstanding collaboration with the University of Uppsala.

In her ceremonial address Marie-Claire Foblets illustrated how anthropological research and its insights into cultural diversity can be relevant for legal thinking and to some extent also for legal practice. The topic of the address draws on Foblets’ previous collaborations with the University of Uppsala. She was active for several years in the Swedish research project “The Impact of Religion: Challenges for Society, Law and Democracy” (IMPACT). Furthermore she has supervised doctoral students and delivered a number of guest lectures.

“It of course means a great deal to me personally to receive this honorary doctorate, and it also demonstrates that the research programme we are developing in the Department ‘Law & Anthropology’ at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (MPI) in Halle is proving to be of increasing significance for urgent questions of justice facing societies today,” explains Foblets. Although the IMPACT project has come to a close, the networks that have developed between the Department ‘Law & Anthropology’ and the project partners will be maintained and deepened. Foblets: “In our Department at the MPI we are currently engaged in creating a database of case law on legal protection of religious and cultural diversity. This will include close collaboration with our IMPACT colleagues who will help us select the relevant data for the Nordic countries.”
