Die Vielfalt des Lebens ist seit der Konferenz von Rio im Jahre 1992 in den Blickpunkt der Öffentlichkeit gerückt. Deutschland leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag zur internationalen Biodiversitätsforschung, um Strategien zur Lösung des Zielkonfliktes zwischen der Bewahrung der biologischen Vielfalt und ihrer nachhaltigen Nutzung zu entwickeln.
Im Rahmen des Symposiums werden im internationalen Rahmen vier Forschungsschwerpunkte des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) vorgestellt und diskutiert.
Die Veranstaltung richtet sich am Eröffnungstag speziell auch an Journalisten. Hierzu werden politische Entscheidungsträger sowie Repräsentanten internationaler Organisationen aus dem In- und Ausland erwartet.
