Professor Kirk Hoppe (Chicago), ein Spezialist für die Geschichte des Kolonialismus in Afrika und der Darstellung Afrikas in kulturellen Diskursen der westlichen Welt ist für ein Jahr Gast der Bayreuther Anglisten.
Bayreuth (UBT). Auf Einladung des Lehrstuhls für Amerikanistik und Anglophone Literaturen und Kulturen (Prof. Dr. Klaus Benesch) ist im akademischen Jahr 2003/04 Professor Kirk A. Hoppe zu Gast an der Universität Bayreuth. Herr Hoppe ist Professor für die Geschichte Afrikas an der University of Illinois in Chicago. Er beschäftigt sich in seiner Forschung vor allem mit der Geschichte des Kolonialismus in Afrika und mit der Darstellung Afrikas in kulturellen Diskursen der westlichen Welt.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Gebiet der "Environmental History", die Literatur Afrikas gehört aber ebenso zu seinen Interessen. Prof. Hoppe ist Autor zahlreicher Essays, zuletzt erschien das Buch Fly Zone: Sleeping Sickness, Environmental Politics and Colonial Conflict in East Africa, 1900-1960 (Greenwood, 2003).
Im Wintersemester unterrichtet er "Colonization and Resistance in African Fiction" in Bayreuth.
