100 years of competence for the future: Carbon Cycle Centre at TU Freiberg celebrates anniversary

Luisa Rischer Pressestelle
Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg

The Institute for Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering (IEC) of the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg is 100 years old. In the course of its history, the institute, which today has the largest number of third-party funds and personnel at Freiberg University, has developed into a leading centre for teaching and research on carbon cycle technologies with international appeal. The anniversary will be celebrated with numerous events and guests from all over the world from 10 to 12 October.

Then as now, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg focuses on the sustainable supply of energy and raw materials on the basis of indigenous resources. This also includes the provision of carbon-containing raw materials for the chemical, metallurgical and energy industries as well as for the mobility sector. The IEC has been dedicated to this research since 1919. In addition to the Professorship for Energy Process Engineering and Thermal Residue Treatment (EVT) of Prof. Dr. Bernd Meyer, the Professorship for Reaction Technology (RT) of Prof. Dr. Sven Kureti also contributes to the success. In recent years, this has established itself primarily in the research field of fuel synthesis and in the field of catalytic exhaust gas purification.

On its way from a lignite research institute to an innovation centre for carbon cycle management, the IEC was accompanied and supported by numerous international scientists, doctoral students and cooperation partners. One of these partners is Prof. Dr. Yong-Wang Li. He is founding managing director of the world's leading technology company for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis "Synfuels China Technology Co., Ltd." in Beijing. With the help of this synthesis, fuels can be produced from a wide variety of carbon carriers, resulting in excellent compatibility with IEC research topics. The TU Bergakademie Freiberg will award Prof. Li an honorary doctorate on 10 October for the close cooperation in science and research that has existed for years, which has not only increased the international visibility of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg in the field of carbon cycle management, but has also promoted the international exchange of young scientists. This makes him the 48th honorary doctor of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg since 1990 and at the same time the first honorary doctor from China.

Afterwards the IEC invites its worldwide partners and colleagues from science, economy and politics to an evening reception at terra mineralia. The first performance in Germany of an ode by Lomonossow, performed by the opera choir of the Central Saxon Theatre, will be heard in the courtyard of the castle. The sheet music was provided by the Marinskij Theatre. The cultural, but also the professional connection between Freiberg and St. Petersburg are still evident from Prof. Meyer's time as rector. The rector of St. Petersburg Mining University, Prof. Dr. Vladimir Stefanovich Litvinenko, is also expected to attend the institute's anniversary. During his visit to Freiberg he will take a look at the Lomonossow House, visit possible sites for a Lomonossow monument in Freiberg and conduct cooperation talks to the UNESCO Centre in St. Petersburg with international guests of the anniversary colloquium.

The scientific colloquium on "Solutions for the Carbon Challenge" with top-class speakers and around 200 international participants will take place on 11 October in the Alte Mensa and will deal with innovations, challenges and future needs for the sustainable use of carbon resources.

At the end of the three-day anniversary events, the IEC will offer its guests guided tours of the Innovation Center for Carbon Conversion Technologies and the test stands for catalysis research and development on October 12, and will organize a tailings pile party for the institute's employees and their families at the Reichen Zeche.
