TU Berlin: German Research Foundation funds new international Research Training Group in mathematics

    German Research Foundation funds Berlin-Oxford cooperation in new international Research Training Group in mathematics

    TU Berlin is the speaker university of a new international Research Training Group where stochasticians from Berlin will be collaborating with colleagues from Oxford. Together they will supervise a group of doctoral candidates. Approved by the German Research Foundation (DFG) on 8 November 2019, the Research Training Group “Stochastic Analysis in Interaction” is one of 16 new Research Training Groups the DFG will be funding for four and a half years beginning April 2020. The Group’s spokespersons are Professor Peter Bank from TU Berlin and Professor Terry Lyons from the University of Oxford. The DFG is funding the Research Training Group with 3.9 million euros.

    Methods of stochastic analysis have become indispensable in many fields of application. Their differential equations are used in a multitude of ways in physics, for instance to model the microstructure of a dynamically changing interface. In population genetics, stochastic interaction models are essential for the statistical analysis of evolutionary processes. Nowadays risks in the financial world are measured and optimally hedged with modern findings of stochastic analysis. Concepts from stochastic analysis have also proven extremely useful in data science in recent years, for example to predict critical complications in patients in the intensive care unit. “These diverse applications are made possible by the mathematically rigorous foundation on which this theory builds and whose further development similarly holds exciting challenges in store. These challenges are part of the basic research in the approved Research Training Group,” says Professor Peter Bank, head of the Chair of Mathematical Finance.

    The broad spectrum of application and mathematical depth of the envisaged research topics is only made possible through cooperation between the internationally renowned research groups from Berlin and Oxford. During their six-month research stays in Berlin or Oxford, the doctoral candidates will intensively work on complementary methods, perspectives, and concepts of the partner group.

    This integrates the international Research Training Group seamlessly into the new academic partnership between the University of Oxford and the Berlin University Alliance initiated last year. In Berlin, the Research Training Group will be part of the Berlin Mathematical School, an institution recognized internationally for doctoral training in mathematics. This also means it will be part of the Cluster of Excellence Math+, the Berlin Mathematics Research Center. Oxford is represented by its Stochastic Analysis Group at the Mathematical Institute and the Department of Statistics. In collaboration with Imperial College London, the Oxford group operates a UK-funded Center for Doctoral Training (CDT) on “Mathematics of Random Systems”, an ideal match for the new Research Training Group.

    Next year, 13 doctoral candidates will begin research in Berlin. Together with a similar number of doctoral candidates in Oxford, they will be supervised by 25 scientists in Berlin and Oxford: five at HU Berlin, eight at TU Berlin and the Weierstrass Institute, and twelve at the University of Oxford.
