Digitization affects all of our lives long-lastingly. On Friday, 21 February 2020, researchers from Jacobs University will talk about the promise and limitation, opportunity and risk that lies in digitization as part of the “Bremen Week of Social Sciences”: The contributions will be broadcast live on the internet, and viewers can participate by asking questions or submitting comments. The event will conclude with discussions with guests from politics and business at the House of Science in Bremen and the campus of Jacobs University.

The extent and diversity of digitization is reflected in the contributions. Starting at 11 a.m., they cover a broad spectrum at hourly intervals, starting with the topic of algorithms in decision making (Prof. Dr. Adalbert Wilhelm). There will be further talks on the formation of filter bubbles (Dr. Jan Lorenz, 12 p.m.), students searching for digital traces (Dr. Jakob Fruchtmann, 1 p.m.), the digital divide of society (Prof. Dr. Hilke Brockmann, 2 p.m.) and the constantly growing capabilities of human-like robots (Prof. Dr. Arvid Kappas).

"Labour 4.0" is the topic of the final event starting at 9 p.m., which will take place at the House of Science and at Jacobs University simultaneously. Prof. Dr. Hilke Brockmann and Prof. Dr. Arvid Kappas will moderate the discussions, with the two locations being digitally linked. Participants in the discussion will be: Dr. Heiko Staroßom, Member of the Board of the Sparkasse Bremen; Inis Ehrlich, Speaker on Digitization at the Senator for Economics, Labor and Europe; Rainer Hamann, SPD; Prof. Dr. Tilo Halaszovich, Jacobs University; Peter Stubbe, Chairman of the Board of the housing company GEWOBA; Heidi Tilliger, State Board Member of the Green Party Bremen; Carsten Meyer-Heder, CDU, Member of the Bremen State Parliament; Prof. Dr. Adalbert Wilhelm, Jacobs University; and students of Jacobs University.

The contributions are embedded in the Bremen Week of Social Sciences, which is being held for the first time from 17 to 22 February 2020. The teaching and research institutes of the University of Bremen and Jacobs University invite all interested parties to a variety of events on the topic of "Societies in Transition", all of which are free of charge. Discussions will take place not only at the universities, but also in Bremen's pubs and in the CITY 46 community cinema.
