Applied Photonics Award 2020: Fraunhofer IOF announces young researcher award

Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Optik und Feinmechanik IOF

Students and doctoral candidates can apply for the Applied Photonics Award 2020 from April 1st until June 30th, 2020. The young researcher award of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF will be presented during the Photonics Days 2020 in Jena. Prizes are awarded for the best final theses in the field of applied photonics.

To recognize new ideas in the field of applied photonics at an early stage, the "Applied Photonics Award" was created at Fraunhofer IOF. This award is given to final theses that deal with innovative and economically exploitable optical technologies for sustainable living and business. The field of study is irrelevant; non-physicists are also explicitly invit-ed to apply.

The "Applied Photonics Award" is handed out for the best final theses related to applied photonics. Besides the prize money, the winners receive the opportunity to present their final theses to a specialist audience and network with representatives of high-ranking companies in the optics and photonics industry for their later career.

    How can one apply?

All bachelor’s, master’s and diploma theses as well as dissertations (German/English), that were registered at a German university or technical college in 2019 and evaluated as passed by the supervisor/reviewer until the application is submitted, are eligible to participate.

A letter of application must be submitted, stating the relevance of the work for applied photonics. In addition, a curriculum vitae, the exposé of the final thesis (max. 2000 characters, including spaces) and a copy of the final thesis as a file are to be submitted. The documents should be sent to the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Preci-sion Engineering IOF at app@iof.fraunhofer.de by June 30th, 2020. Any questions will also be answered under the address.

The prize will be awarded during the Photonics Days in Jena on September 22th, 2020.

In addition to an invitation to the Photonics Days and an opportunity to gain valuable information and contacts there for their future careers, the winners will receive the fol-lowing prize money depending on the category:

    • Category A: Best Bachelor Thesis (1000 €)
    • Category B: Best Master Thesis (2000 €)
    • Category C: Best Dissertation (3000 €)

The presentation of the Applied Photonics Award is again kindly supported by the Asso-ciation of German Engineers (VDI) as well as the companies Trumpf, Jenoptik, and Ac-tive Fiber Systems.
