100 years of doctoral studies at TU Bergakademie Freiberg: PhDs students of Freiberg from all over the world

Luisa Rischer Pressestelle
Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg

As the university celebrates the centennial of its entitlement to confer doctorates it reaches out to former PhD students to share their experiences of being doctoral candidates at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Beginning June 5 the stories will be published online to show the variety of topics and peoples in postgraduate research.

„We invite our former PhD students to share their stories along with a picture of the academic cap they received from their alma mater. We are very much looking forward to a lot of different stories showing the impact of our former PhD students all over the world as well as their bonds to our university”, says Dr. Kristina Wopat, director Graduate and Research Academy at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Since 1920, there have been over 5,300 successful doctoral students at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

What has been initially planned as an on-site celebration, has been transferred to virtual formats due to the corona-pandemic: “As we are not to allowed to get together to celebrate we have established a website and virtual events which will provide an insight into the 100 years long history of doctoral studies at our university”, explains Rector Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht. The website offers background information on the entitlement to confer doctorates, a virtual tour of the campus as well as welcoming addresses by the Saxon Minister President Michael Kretschmer, the Saxon Minister of Science, Sebastian Gemkow, the President of the German Rector’s Conference, Prof. Dr. Peter-André Alt, the chairman of the Association „Freunde und Förderer der TU Bergakademie Freiberg“, Prof. Dr. Schramm, and the Rector Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht.

On October 30, 2020, further on-site events at TU Bergakademie Freiberg will take place: A colloquium on the history of the entitlement to confer doctorates at TU Bergakademie Freiberg (in German) and a “Freiberg Future Forum” for scientists and doctoral students wishing to discuss potentials of carbon neutral economies and societies (in English).
