Students and prospective students can take advantage of TU Berlin’s Academic Advising Service from their homes. The Academic Advising team has prepared videos, online events and infotalks to help students gain an understanding of studying at university in Germany, choose the right courses and guide them through their time at TU Berlin.
Academic Advising will be offering a range of online events and infotalks over the coming weeks. We would kindly ask you to publish details on your own website etc.
Live event on 11 June 2020 at 15:00
A live event entitled “Studieren – ja, nein, vielleicht?” looks at your options after completing your school-leaving examinations and also gives you the chance to ask your questions - all from the comfort of your sofa at home.
“Our experience of working from home over the last weeks shows that you should have a headset to hand, log in a few minutes before the video conference is due to start and plug in your LAN cable if experiencing problems with your Internet connection. It is also better to log in from your kitchen table rather than the park round the corner,” says event host Steffen Göths.

Other digital offers
The first digital infotalk deals with myths and rumors surrounding studying and can be viewed at any time of day or night. Further infotalks looking at issues such as degree programs will be added successively throughout the coming weeks.
Digital offers are also available to students who have already commenced their studies, such as webinars provided by Psychological Counseling to help deal with exam stress and practical tips to help you stop procrastinating.

Individual advising
Individual discussions and conversations remain the cornerstone of the services provided by Academic Advising - even during Covid-19. Our advisors are busily emailing from studienberatung@tu-berlin.de, telephoning and organizing web meetings for “stranded” students and prospective students, no matter where in the world they are or what time of day it is there. “The circumstances may have changed, but the questions remain essentially the same for students and prospective students: Is this the right degree program for me? What is important for my future? Where can I get reliable information to help me make the right decision?”, says student advisor Sylvi Laschett. “It’s just at the moment we are seeing an intensification of certain questions and issues which are also normally important: How can I find the right contact person for my question? Do I have the right technical equipment to take part in the digital semester? What do I do about my studies if I suddenly lose my means of financing myself or if I have to look after my child all day?” It is a great help not to have to deal with these problems on your own and getting in touch with the right experts can even make the difference between having to stop and being able to continue studying.
Important information and tips for digital studying were put together right at the start of the digital summer semester 2020: How can I exchange ideas with other students despite contact restrictions? Who can I approach if I have severe financial difficulties? And what can space travel teach us about mental health when working from home? There is no lack of ideas and content for further digital formats, as Barış Ünal, head of Academic Advising, explains: “Like everyone else, we also have to deal with bad connections, multitasking within our own four walls and other pitfalls. A video conference or tutorial can never replace a personal discussion or conversation. But until such time as this is possible again, we are going to make the best of things and we are delighted that we can explore other options to reach out to our students. I am sure in the long run we will have the best of both options.”
