Daniela Schimming Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Agrarentwicklung in Transformationsökonomien (IAMO)

IAMO Forum 2020 takes place for the first time as an online conference

Digital technologies reshape agricultural and food system not only in the EU but all over Eurasia creating new opportunities for more efficient, competitive and sustainable food value chains. As technological progress is rapid, prerequisites for a successful digital transformation are to be created in the form of supportive regulatory frameworks, infrastructure, human capital and consumers’ and producers’ trust. Against this background, national and international experts from science, business and politics will discuss questions concerning the digitization of the agricultural and food industry at the IAMO Forum 2020 from 24 to 26 June 2020.

IAMO Forum 2020 entitled “Digital transformation – towards sustainable food value chains in Eurasia” aims to connect research, business, civil society and politics and promote debate on economic, social, environmental and institutional aspects of digital transformation of food value chains. The country focus is on economies of Europe, Central Asia and China, including comparative studies.

The first conference day (24 June 2020) will focus on the latest digital developments and their impact on agricultural markets and food system from scientific perspectives. The second day (25 June 2020) will highlight the benefits and challenges of implementing new technologies from a business perspective. On the third day (26 June 2020), the event will culminate with a panel discussion, joined by nationally and internationally recognized guests from science, civil organizations, agribusiness and policy and aimed at discussing the possible ways and strategies to achieve the comprehensive digital transformation of agri-food sector. In the spirit of the young generation's participation in socially relevant topics, an interactive session for school children on the topic “Bits, Bytes & Burger?! Digitalization in Food Production” is planned after the panel discussion.

IAMO Forum 2020 is jointly organized by IAMO, the Agriculture and Food Global Practice of the World Bank, the Kyiv School of Economics, the Tashkent State Agrarian University, the Higher School of Economics Moscow, the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Belgrade and the Institute of Agricultural Economics and Development, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. The conference is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Rentenbank and the city Halle (Saale).

    About IAMO

The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies (IAMO) analyses economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector, and in rural areas. The geographic focus covers the enlarging EU, transition regions of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, as well as Central and Eastern Asia. IAMO works to enhance the understanding of institutional, structural and technological changes. Moreover, IAMO studies the resulting impacts on the agricultural and food sector as well as the living conditions of rural populations. The outcomes of our work are used to derive and analyse strategies and options for enterprises, agricultural markets and politics. Since its founding in 1994, IAMO has been part of the Leibniz Association, a German community of independent research institutes.
