Dr.-Ing. Marcus Wenzel has been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal

    The Max Planck Society honours his outstanding achievements as a Ph. D. student at the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg and his research on syngas production from carbon dioxide.

    Versatile Applications in Chemical Industry: Research on Syngas produced from Carbon Dioxide

    Dr.-Ing. Marcus Wenzel, former scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg, received the Otto Hahn Medal, awarded by the Max Planck Society. The prestigious prize for gifted junior scientists of the Max Planck Society was given for his work on Reverse Water-Gas Shift Chemical Looping for Syngas Production from CO2.

    Dr.-Ing. Marcus Wenzel, alumnus of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems Magdeburg, has been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal for junior scientists of the Max Planck Society for his outstanding scientific achievements. The award was presented on occasion of the 71st Annual Meeting of the Max Planck Society in June 2020. The meeting was held virtually because of the restrictions due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The prize was given for his Ph.D. thesis on Reverse Water-Gas Shift Chemical Looping for Syngas Production from CO2.

    Marcus Wenzel has studied Process Engineering at the Hochschule Anhalt in Köthen, Saxony-Anhalt, and graduated with the Bachelor of Engineering in 2010. From 2010 to 2013 he studied Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in the master degree course, including one semester at the Technical University in Lappeenranta, Finland. For his master thesis he already cooperated with the Max Planck Institute Magdeburg with the department of Process and Systems Engineering, headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Sundmacher. From 2013 to 2018 he worked as a Ph.D. student at the Max Planck Institute where he successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis in October 2018. After that, Marcus Wenzel has been working as a postdoctoral scientist at the Max Planck Institute in Magdeburg where he continued to investigate how syngas can be produced sustainably from CO2 in the future.

    He gained work experience during several internships, e.g. at ContiTech AG in Dannenberg, Wacker Chemie AG in Burghausen and Ningbo Oceanking Chemical Development Corporation in China. Since May 2020 Marcus Wenzel is employed as Technology Expert with Bayer AG in Leverkusen.

    The Otto Hahn Medal

    The Max Planck Society has honoured up to 30 young scientists and researchers each year with the Otto Hahn Medal for outstanding scientific achievements since 1978. The award comes with a monetary sum of 7500 euros as recognition. The prize is intended to motivate especially gifted early career researchers to pursue a future university or research career. Since 1978, more than 1000 scientists and researchers have been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal. The award is presented during the general meeting in the following year.
