Sibylle Günter now member of the National Academy of Sciences

Professor Dr. Sibylle Günter, Scientific Director of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) in Garching and Greifswald, in recognition of her scientific achievements was elected as a member of the Leopoldina, the National Academy of Sciences.

Founded in 1652, the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, which today has around 1600 members from almost all branches of science, was appointed German National Academy of Sciences in 2008. In this capacity, it deals with future social issues from a scientific perspective, communicates the results to politics and the public and represents these issues nationally and internationally.

After studying physics in Rostock and guest research in the USA, Sibylle Günter was appointed scientific member of Max Planck Society in 2000. Here she headed the Tokamak Theory Department until 2011, when she was elected Scientific Director of IPP. IPP is concerned with the physical principles for a fusion power plant which, like the sun, will generate energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. Since 2001 Sibylle Günter has been an apl. Professor at the University of Rostock and since 2006 Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Munich. Sibylle Günter will receive the Leopoldina membership certificate in 2021 at the annual symposium of the Leopoldina class "Mathematics, Natural and Technical Sciences".
