THE- and QS-Young University Rankings: Again excellent results for the University of Bayreuth

Anja-Maria Meister Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth has firmly established itself in further international rankings in the front field: Both in the QS and THE Ranking of young universities under 50 years of age, it is attested to very good successes in research and teaching. Bavarian Minister of Science Bernd Sibler congratulates the University of Bayreuth on its good result.

In the current QS ranking "Top 50 under 50", the University of Bayreuth has moved up one level and is now in the ranking group 81-90. 150 international young universities were evaluated in the ranking. This "Young University Ranking" is derived from the recently published QS World University Ranking, in which the University of Bayreuth is clearly above the worldwide average in terms of decisive criteria for scientific quality and internationality. The overall ranking published by QS Quacquarelli Symonds evaluated more than 5,500 universities and colleges worldwide this year. In this overall ranking of all universities ranked by QS, the University of Bayreuth is now among the top ten percent.

In the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Ranking, the University of Bayreuth now occupies the 51st of 414 places. This year, THE Young University Ranking assessed more young universities than ever before; in the years before, it was only about 350 or 250. In four of the five assessment categories, the University of Bayreuth has improved significantly in 2020: research, teaching, third-party funding from industry and international orientation. Among the ten German universities listed in THE Young University Ranking 2020, Bayreuth ranks sixth in the larger competition. The THE Ranking is one of the leading worldwide university comparisons. The criteria and procedures are tailored to the diversity of the global university landscape and are constantly being developed further.

"The competition is getting tougher, there is no question about that", comments Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, president of the University of Bayreuth. "I am proud that we - researchers, lecturers and students - do not have to shy away from the competition and find ourselves once again in the top ranks". Especially for international students, these rankings are crucial when choosing a place to study. "With our entry into the edX platform for online courses that are accessible worldwide, we will also become even more visible through good ranking positions".

Bavarian Minister of Science Bernd Sibler congratulates the University of Bayreuth on its good result: "The University of Bayreuth is not only a valuable initiator for science and economy in its region. Its good results in the Young University Ranking 2020 and its improvement in four out of five evaluation categories show that it enjoys an excellent reputation in the field of science at both national and international level and is therefore also an attractive place to study for students from Germany and abroad.“
