An anthology and on-line book launch on research perspectives on the post-pandemic world
Researchers, scientists, and scholars from a range of disciplines have written thirty emphatic articles for a kaleidoscopic essay collection of their views of the post-pandemic world. Members of the Board of Directors of the University of Freiburg’s Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), Prof. Dr. Bernd Kortmann and Prof. Dr. Günther Schulze, are joining together in publishing the anthology “Jenseits von Corona” (“Beyond Corona”), which will become available on 25 September 2020. Kortmann and Schulze will present the publication on Tuesday, 29 September, during an on-line launch event that can be live-streamed. After an introduction from both publishers as well as keynote speeches from Prof. Dr. Johanna Pink and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Osterhammel, participants and viewers will have an opportunity for discussion starting from 6:30 p.m. CET.
Around two-thirds of the first-rate authors of the concise analyses are either connected to FRIAS or the University of Freiburg. Among them are the legal scholar and former president of Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court, Prof. Dr. Andreas Voßkuhle, the economist and chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, Prof. Dr. Lars Feld, the English language and literature specialist and vice president of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Prof. Dr. Julika Griem, and the computer scientist and chairwoman of the German Council of Science and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Dorothea Wagner. In their foreword, the publishers have written, “We consciously sought contributions from all the major sciences and humanities because corona has made deep inroads into all areas of life and no single discipline can create a complete picture of the world beyond corona.” They continue that the point is to look forward already now – “in order to divine what kind of world we will be living in when we’ve gotten through this crisis and the virus has lost its potential to cause fear.”
Do the deeply disruptive changes caused by the crisis mark a turning point? Or is it more of a temporary blip, that will fail to halt long-term trends? The short essays are divided into seven categories – ranging from everyday life with and after the coronavirus to its influence on politics, as well as the economy, state, and religion, the church and philosophy, to the question of the post-corona world order.
