In cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (Bundesamt für Naturschutz, BfN), the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) is organising an online conference on current topics and requirements in Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) from 19 to 21 January 2021. The conference will focus on the question of how human activities can be reconciled with ecological functions of oceans.
The aim of MSP NATURE 2021 is to promote the development and implementation of Marine Spatial Planning and to draw attention to current challenges. The protection of marine nature is becoming increasingly important, especially where the marine space is used multiple times and conflicts of interest and use arise.
MSP NATURE 2021 serves as a platform in order to exchange different concepts of considering Nature Conservation in Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). Therefore a proposal on how to implement Nature Conservation in MSP will be presented based on selected findings from various research projects of the organising institutions. The conference will follow an interdisciplinary approach. It provides the opportunity to discuss international, national and regional efforts and strategies for anchoring Nature Conservation in MSP. It also takes future requirements and developments into account.
The first day of the conference will focus on basic principles such as the legal and planning framework for Marine Spatial Planning. National legal bases and international conventions will be examined in more detail. The second day offers three sessions on the topics of "Marine Nature Conservation", "Ecosystem-Based-Approach - Integration of Nature Conservation into MSP" and "MSP - national and international examples". In the afternoon, a workshop will address current challenges. The third day will focus on the future of Marine Spatial Planning. By March 2021, maritime spatial development plans must be adopted in Europe in accordance with the "EU directive of establishing a framework for maritime spatial planning". But what happens afterwards? In the session "ERASMUS+ Knowledge Flows - Visions for MSP beyond 2021" young planners will have the opportunity to discuss future steps in Marine Spatial Planning.
The conference is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation). It will take place virtually, participation is free of charge, registration is required.
