At the top of the "Nature Index Germany": Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Bayreuth

Brigitte Kohlberg Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

In the recently published "Nature Index Germany 2020", the University of Bayreuth achieved fourth place in the field of Earth and Environmental Sciences, behind the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the Max Planck Society, and the Leibniz Association. It is thus listed as the best university nationwide in this field. The annually published "Nature Index" resulted from the evaluation of publications from 2015 to 2019 in 82 international journals of top scientific research.

The new subject-based ranking reflects the research strength of two long-standing focuses of the University of Bayreuth. For decades, high-pressure and high-temperature research, which is primarily concerned with the structure and dynamics of the Earth and terrestrial planets, as well as ecology and environmental sciences have been interdisciplinary focus areas of great international standing thanks to outstanding research results and innovative projects. New interdisciplinary master's programmes at the University of Bayreuth tie in with these research competencies.

"Using the latest research technology, the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics (BGI), a research centre of the University of Bayreuth, regularly makes significant contributions to the elucidation of processes that take place thousands of kilometres below the Earth's surface. They often influence life on our planet more than we are aware of in our everyday lives. By simulating pressure and temperature conditions deep inside the Earth, we have repeatedly succeeded in discovering previously unknown states of matter. Not infrequently, our research results are of immediate relevance when it comes to the probability of volcanic eruptions, for example," says Prof. Dr. Hans Keppler, member of the BGI Board of Directors.

"Ecology and environmental sciences form a widely ramified research network at the University of Bayreuth with a focus on 'Global Change', 'Biodiversity', 'Ecosystems', and 'Environmental and Nature Protection'. The projects range from basic research to the application of new findings, for example in climate protection and the preservation of biodiversity. We are very pleased that the strength of our research competencies has now been reflected in the new 'Nature Index Germany'," admits Prof. Dr. Stefan Peiffer, Director of the Bayreuth Centre for Ecology & Environmental Research (BayCEER), which bundles the research activities at the University of Bayreuth in these fields.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
