Webinar: "After the storm of the Capitol: How endangered is democracy?"

Susanne Heinke Public Relations
Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC)

by Professor Thomas R. Mockaitis, DePaul University, Chicago,
on 18 January 2021, 17:00-18:30 hrs (Berlin time)

On 6 January, radical supporters of US President Donald Trump violently entered the Capitol and interrupted the joint session of Congress convened to formally name Joe Biden as president-elect. The breach of the Capitol led to the evacuation and lockdown of the Capitol building and five deaths. Was this an isolated event or is the democratic consensus in the US breaking down, challenged by those whose alternative view of reality prevents them from accepting any version of events but their own? Professor Thomas Mockaitis, DePaul University, Chicago, will provide context and background on the insurrection attempt.
Dr Marc von Boemcken, Researcher at BICC, will, as discussant, reflect upon how the events in the US are being perceived in Germany and upon current dynamics of extremist radicalisation in this country.
Thomas Mockaitis is Professor of History at DePaul University, where he teaches British, Modern European and Military History courses. His research and writing cover violent extremism, insurgency, counterinsurgency and peace operations. As a consultant for the Institute for Security Governance at the Naval Postgraduate School, he presents on these subjects at venues around the world.

The Zoom- event will be moderated by Maurice Doering, Researcher at BICC and coordinator of CoRE-NRW - Connecting Research on Extremism in North Rhine-Westphalia.
